Christmas Tales from Other Lands

PETRU'S CANDLE
Petru's Candle is based on A Christmas Tale, written by Queen Marie of Romania. Petru, a little boy living in a poor Romanian village fears the worst for his mother's health, so he sets off to light a candle in a church as an offering in order for her to recuperate. On the way, he chooses to give his candle to a lost soul who speaks to him from the bottom of a well. It turns out to be an angel, who assures him his mother is recovered because of his sacrifice to a soul in need.

BUSY BEFANA
Busy Befana is based on the Italian Legend of Befana, an old woman who is responsible for delivering presents to good children every Jan. 6, Epiphany. She meets up with the three wise men on their way to Bethlehem. She declines an invitation to come along, reconsiders, then hurries to catch up. Her search for the baby Jesus is the reason why present day children wake to find baked goods, etc at their bedside every January in her hopes that they are the child she searches for.
MUSTAFA'S EYES
Mustafa's Eyes is based on "The Little Hunchback of Zia," a story out of Syria. Mustafa is a little boy born a hunchback, orphaned, and brought up since birth by a mean old crone. He fends for himself after she throws him out, and finds his way to an inn where he finds Mary and Joseph. The next morning, after Jesus is born, he approaches and is miraculously cured at the infant's touch.
